Several years ago, I regularly facilitated a creative writing group. Each week, we would work through a few writing prompts that I had prepared. One of the most evocative prompts was an image of a barn. So many memories were tied up in rural experiences. In this painting, the sky darkens on a winter evening, but the warmth of the barn remains.
A vintage painting of a barn in winter is the focus of this collage. The barn is a transfer over a beautiful piece of turquoise and gold Japanese paper. Cranes are a frequent theme of such papers and they also appear in this collage, as do assorted other papers, including some I have rust-dyed.
In keeping with the salvaged wood substrate, the sides are unfinished, with bits of paper and paint drips visible. This collage will be best suited to stand on a shelf, mantle, table, piano...but a sawtooth hanger could be added to this piece if you wish to hang it. Signed on the back, this piece is finished with a matte varnish to ensure protection against fading, discolouration, and moisture. Avoid placing all artwork in direct sunlight.
